"OH, SAY CAN YOU SEE..."
Exhibition 28 November – 8 December 2008
Darwin's black hole
Jean Christensen works with image and perception, creating startling pieces that subvert any complacency in what we think that we see.
A New York artist with a science and engineering background, he now lives in France. In his subtle, intricate and subversive collages he works with the waste and trash of an era already coming to an end, re-imagining it and confronting the globalised world markets and marketeers with a re-invention, a transformation of their own images of manipulation.
This exquisite work is highly iconoclastic, but also highly technical, using supermarket fliers, junk-mail and other detritus in a surreptitious and under-the-radar, yet deliberate and surprising way.
Taking 1st Place in the public vote at the 12th Salon International du Collage 2005 in Paris, Jean Christensen’s images bewilder and excite:
“...A subtle assemblage of pictures of fruit, vegetables, clothing ….make a strong statement about the shortcomings of a world, victim of globalisation”
La Nouvelle Republique
“At first it works illusionistically, like the best of any romantic landscape … but then there’s the bonus of moving in close and finding the perversely surreal layer of imagery.”
